Commissioning Art: What to Expect

To capture the form of the horse in fine art is to honour a centuries-old bond. Throughout history, the horse has remained one of art’s most powerful subjects, from partners in agriculture, war and exploration, to the majesty sought in depictions of monarchs and military leaders.

Commissioning a bespoke equine portrait can capture a much loved partner, celebrate a moment of sporting success, or bring heritage, distinction or atmosphere to a commercial space.

For private collectors and owners, a commission can focus on capturing character, idiosyncratic detail, and expression.

Commercial commissions can bring feeling and warmth to a private office or set the ambience in a hospitality space.

Consultation and Brief: Once the commission is booked, we will discuss your vision for the piece. I will ask questions to get to know your subject. We will consider style, composition, and background, and discuss setting and any framing considerations.

Selecting Size and Composition: I will study a selection of reference photos before we select a preferred one, considering stance, lighting, perspective, expression, and character. I will suggest the most suitable medium. We will agree the size of the portrait, and I will confirm a quote and give an indicative timeframe to completion.

Completion and Presentation: I use professional, artist-grade materials selected for their longevity to complete my work. Pastels and pencils are highly lightfast and all surfaces are acid free and archival. On completion and approval, framing and shipping will be arranged if required
